Many of today's VPN products emphasize security and interoperability, with performance a lower priority—and rightly so. A VPN is usually set up with security as one of the primary goals, and in many cases, VPNs need to be able to interoperate among different vendors, so interoperability is also a key factor. PPTP performance seems to be on the same levels of the 320, which is a clear disappointment. Gonna do some more tests though. Update: Did aditional tests over a 50/50mb dedicated link and got 40/45mb. Gonna try on a couple more days over a 100/100mb (the same I have on the router) to see if i come near the theoretical peak. I see a lot of posts about slow PPTP performance, without a good resolution of the issue. In my case, I have a PPTP link set up across about 200ms of latency. After much googling, I reduced the MTU, disabled "disable packet reordering", disabled SPI, disabled encryption, and got it to a whopping <1/4th of the available bandwidth (<1.5Mbps out L2TP (Layer Two Tunneling Protocol) is considered a bit more secure than PPTP as it uses 256 bit keys giving a higher level of encryption. L2TP encapsulates data twice making it less efficient and slightly slower. OpenVPN offers the most secure connection option at the moment without sacrificing performance and speed.
