Sep 22, 2017 · Having the same problem. Super annoying. Have tried turning notifications on/off. No luck. Seems to reset itself when new mail comes in, but then shows the number of new messages after those are read. Ugh. Disappointing, I loved the Gmail app. Might go back to Mail or another app.
